Chapter 3: The White Dress
I wore the white dress. I hated myself for it, but I wore it, because my mother's room had a window that faced the garden and she liked to sit there in the afternoon. If Bo stopped paying, she would lose that window. His driver picked me up at seven. The Bo house was full of people and candlelight. Chen Sisi sat beside Bo in a pale pink dress, laughing at something his cousin said. When I walked in, the laughter dipped, then resumed. Bo's mother looked me over and nodded. "That is better." I sat where I was told. Chen Sisi leaned across Bo to pour me wine. "Sister Yin, I heard you were upset about a little post. I hope you do not mind me. I only posted the truth." I did not touch the glass. Bo's hand closed around my wrist under the table. "Drink," he said softly. "Do not make a scene." I remembered a night years ago when I drank at a company dinner and broke out in a rash, unable to breathe. Bo had stayed by my hospital bed all night and sworn that anyone who made me drink would answer to him. The promise had been real. Its expiration date had simply passed. I picked up the glass. Bo's eyes softened, as if he thought I had finally surrendered. Then I tilted it and poured the wine slowly onto the floor. The table went silent. "No apology," I said. "The breakup is real. I will repay the care home. From today, I have nothing to do with you, your family, or Chen Sisi."
