Chapter 1: The Sheets

On the way back from a business trip, my husband's social media post appeared. A cute cat, with the caption: "Taking care of my son again. I used to think he was troublesome, but now I find him adorable." In the photo, beside the cat, was a woman's slender arm. It was his first love. They stayed in touch because of this cat. I hesitated, then called him. "I arrive tonight. Please change the bedsheets. My cat allergy will make me miserable." After I hung up, I told myself that if he did this one small thing, I would pretend nothing had happened. When I got home, the sheets were the same ones I had put on before I left. He looked at my silence and shrugged. "They are not dirty. Do not be so dramatic." For once I did not argue. If no one would change the sheets, I would change the man. That night I slept better than I had in years. The next morning Gu Chenzhou looked surprised when I came out of the guest room. "Why did you sleep there?" "The master bedroom is covered in cat hair. I would die." I still remembered the first time he brought the cat home without telling me. I had not had an attack in years. We had no medicine in the house. My throat swelled and the feeling of suffocation swallowed me. I thought I would die on the floor. Afterward he held me and cried. "I am sorry, Anran. I forgot in the rush. I promise this is the last time." His promises were only words. The next time Xia Ruoning needed someone to keep the cat, he volunteered without hesitation. "I am the cat's father. I have an obligation."

Chapter 2: The Allergy

"Yesterday Ruoning was there," he said, coughing awkwardly. "If I cleaned the room in front of her, she would think I was disgusted by the cat and she would fight with me again." "So I should suffer." "You are not suffering. You are making a fuss." I looked at the bed and said nothing. I had spent years being told that my allergy was an overreaction, that the cat was harmless, that I should be more generous. I had believed it enough to keep medicine in my bag and antihistamines in my desk. I had learned to check the sofa before sitting. I had learned to sleep with the window open. But I had never learned to make him choose me. That afternoon Xia Ruoning posted a photo of the cat at the vet. Gu Chenzhou was in the background, holding a bag of cat food. "Even ten thousand yuan would be worth it," she wrote. I looked at the photo and felt nothing. I liked it. His call came within a minute. "Anran, do not misunderstand. I was passing by to deliver documents. Ruoning said something was wrong with the cat. I was worried, so I took her to the clinic. We gave it a bath." "Okay." He was silent. "You are not angry?" "It is your cat. You should take care of it." In the past I would have fought. Now I was calm. He noticed the calm and mistook it for peace. "Anran, you have changed. You are so much more generous now. It is good." Yes. Because I no longer cared.
