Chapter 1: The Return
The day the mistress came to provoke me, I was three months pregnant. She threw a stack of photographs in my face and smiled. "Sister, what is the use of occupying the position of Mrs. Gu? A'Yan says he will divorce you sooner or later. The child in your belly is only a tool to placate his parents." I shook with anger. We struggled. She pushed me down the stairs. As blood spread beneath me, I heard her call Gu Yan in a panic. "A'Yan, I did not mean to. She lost her footing." He was silent for a moment. Then he said, "Do not be afraid. I will clean it up." Then I woke. I was standing in my bedroom, my belly still flat, the morning light on the curtains. The same day. I looked at my stomach and pressed my hand against it. Then I picked up my phone and called my mother-in-law. "Mother, I am not feeling well today. Could you come and stay with me?" She arrived in half an hour with three insulated containers. She was in her fifties but looked thirty-seven. When she saw that only the servant was home, she frowned. "Where is A'Yan?" "The company had something. He left early." Her face cooled. "You are only three months pregnant, and he is already too busy to stand on the ground." In my last life, I had made excuses for him. This time I said nothing.
