Nina Shen has been courted, flattered, and promised a marriage of two people and no one else. On her wedding night, before the shared cup is even poured, a girl climbs out from under the bridal bed and settles into her new husband's lap: Luna Jiang, the childhood sweetheart the Lin family has always kept in reserve. What follows is worse than the betrayal. The maids bring hot water without being asked. The old matron explains, kindly, that Luna's father was the master's schoolmate, that the two families reached an understanding years ago, and that Nina is not the first bride expected to look the other way. Adrian denies nothing. He only asks her not to make a scene. So Nina decides he will get nothing she promised him.
