The Spare Lemon
Seven years of friendship, and no one noticed she was leaving
Nina has spent seven years as the fifth member of a group chat: the one who remembers every birthday, who shows up with soup when someone is sick, and who is never quite celebrated in return. When she loses her job and posts the news, the thread goes silent. Ten minutes later it floods with congratulations for her best friend Cora, who has just been promoted, and Nina's boyfriend Lucas and their two oldest friends begin planning a dinner that revolves entirely around someone else. Then Lucas texts: since Nina has the day free, could she pick up Cora's cake? A quiet, sharp story about the arithmetic of being loved less than you love.
