Twelve Dishes, Five Chairs
She cooked the feast and was still the only one asked to leave
She has hosted the holiday dinner for years: twelve dishes, cooked alone from six in the morning, in an apartment she pays for. This year her three childhood friends bring soda and chips, her boyfriend Derek's friend Wendy brings nothing but an apology about not being able to cook, and then Wendy's roommate needs somewhere to spend the holiday. There are five chairs at the table and already five people. One of them has to give up a seat, and it isn't going to be the guest. When the roommate arrives and mentions that she was told the host would be working late, the evening's real shape comes clear. A story about the moment a woman stops being grateful for a place at her own table.
